Being or bringing into harmony; a feeling of being
“at one” with another being
In this 1-Day Attunement Training for Therapists, you will exercise your attunement muscles and strengthen your abilities to attune to and evoke attachment emotions, longings and fears. In a positive, encouraging and safe environment, we will learn about the importance of attunement as therapists and practice attunement skills through didactic instruction, music, video clips, poetry, experiential exercises and role play opportunities.
All Therapists Welcome.
Tune your therapeutic ear to the emotions of the
therapeutic and relational dance.
Sam Jinich, PhD and Michelle Gannon, PhD
In this one day workshop with Sam and Michelle, therapists will exercise their attunement muscles in order to increase their trust in their own ability to attune to and evoke attachment emotions, longings and fears. We will use music, poetry, video clips, photography, and guided imagery to help tune our therapeutic ear to the emotions of the relational dance.
According to Dr. Sue Johnson, “Emotion is the music of the relational dance.” Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) research confirms that deeper levels of emotional engagement are associated with more positive and successful therapy outcomes in EFT for couples (Johnson & Greenberg, 1988; Makinen & Johnson, 2006). In Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), primary emotions are accessed, explored and deepened to facilitate a couple’s shift toward more adaptive and integrated expressions of attachment emotions and longings. As the therapist’s level of experiential involvement deepens, the client’s discourse often shifts from statements that are more superficial and impersonal to heartfelt expressions of vulnerability. Evoking vulnerability in our clients requires that we remain finely attuned to their underlying emotional experience. Learning to be more highly attuned will be helpful with individuals and couples that therapists work with and many participants find attunement training to be also personally helpful.
Sam Jinich, PhD and Michelle Gannon, PhD of the San Francisco Center for Emotionally Focused Therapy (SFCEFT) and Hold Me Tight Workshop will lead the Attunement Training for Therapists and welcome therapists of all levels and backgrounds.
The Attunement Training for Therapists presented by Dr Sam Jinich and Dr Michelle Gannon is a wonderful opportunity for therapists of all levels to develop comfort and expertise in a skill essential to creating successful alliances with our EFT clients. Learning key milestones in the research supports participants in acquiring skills through gentle and carefully targeted experiential exercises. Extensive use of video, photos, cartoons, and music assist in making the theoretical material delightful to learn and unforgettable. The Attunement Training is a day well spent for those who want an introduction to attunement to those who wish to polish their skills. ~Charlie Ruff, MFT; Citrus Heights
Sam’s and Michelle’s workshop, “Attunement Training for Therapists” was, as their trainings always are, superb! They are both exquisitely attuned to their own emotions, so they have a real ability to help other therapists become more comfortable with their own emotions and with the emotions of their clients. We learned that success in psychotherapy is strongly linked to the client’s feeling liked and empathized (as opposed to sympathized) with by the therapist. “Attunement” is the royal road to this bond. They used evocative videos, music, and role-plays to help us explore the inner terrain of our emotional landscape and that of our clients. I have taken several workshops with Sam and Michelle and it seems that the lessons I learn from them are always, at heart, about increasing our ability to love ourselves and others. I am always surprised and delighted at the depth to which Sam and Michelle can take me in my own emotional process while at the same time making me a better therapist. ~Mara Alverson, MFT; Santa Cruz
“I had the rewarding experience of participating in the Attunement Training for Therapists led by Sam and Michelle. I so appreciated seeing the uncomfortable places where I might just want to ask a question or focus on something else that can distract rather than deepening more into the emotional realms. Bringing this into awareness, practicing with several different therapists, using our difficult client material and that scene from “Ordinary People” really gave me the body feel of more confidently staying with the emotional process work.
Thank you, thank you.” ~Barbara Gabriel, MFT; San Francisco
“In their workshops and trainings, Michelle and Sam strike a perfect balance between didactic teachings, video demonstrations and role plays. They create a climate of safety and warmth so we are better able to integrate the new information and they are very accessible to questions and comments.
I recommend any workshops or trainings that Michelle and Sam do together”.
~Jennifer Olden, MFT

I always find learning with them so inspiring as they are so patient, knowledgeable, respectful and able to cover all the material in a timely and professional way. Thank you Michelle & Sam!” ~Dalia Anderman, MFT
Sam and Michelle create such a wonderfully loving, safe, and rich environment for learning that enables participants to grow immensely in the process. I found their workshop to be “education at the DNA level”
