EFT Core Skills
If you have completed the EFT Externship, are legally allowed to practice psychotherapy in your State and are interested in deepening your understanding of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) while strengthening your confidence in practicing EFT, please join us!
Our Core Skills Additional Training in EFT offers therapists supportive opportunities for direct, hands on learning of the EFT approach. In a safe, positive and fun environment, you will learn how to focus your attention on the emotions of your clients and to access, explore, deepen and expand emotions.
We will practice how to facilitate new couples therapy conversations that increase the feelings of secure attachment, closeness and connection. In a small group, you will study the EFT model and the heart of the steps, stages and interventions through experiential exercises, role-plays and watching videotaped examples. Together, we will also observe your own work and your peers’ work via video recordings and offer you feedback and guidance. Throughout this process, you will receive personal attention from experienced EFT Therapists and Supervisors.
In this Core Skills Training, we get to the underlying essential strengths of EFT and Attachment Theory so you can learn to access them more instinctively and in a way that resonates with who you naturally are as a therapist and in ways that supports your existing clinical strengths. We will provide an encouraging, positive, safe learning environment.
By viewing our relationships through the attachment lens, we can become more empathic and attuned to our clients. Attunement is a two way street. Not only will you understand your couple’s emotions better, but they will also experience your attunement in emotional ways that are characteristic of helpful EFT couples therapy.
Emotion is the main show in town when it comes to EFT so we need to learn how to work with emotions and how to access and deepen them. In the process of safe, positive experiential exercises, we will get in touch with emotions. One of our goals as EFT Therapists is to learn how to attune and drop down into our clients’ experience with curiosity and wonder and compassion. Once we have that down, we can more easily track emotions and attachment-related themes and understand how the couple’s negative patterns are co-created and maintained. It can be quite helpful and important to understand what happens moment by moment within them and within you.
Emotions are the music of the relational dance. Our couples need our help changing the music of their distressed relationship so that they can begin to change the steps in their dance towards increased safety, connection, closeness and intimacy. In our Core Skills Advanced Training, we will spend some time together learning how to tune our ears to the music of the relational dances.
Each participant is required to present one couples therapy session audio or video (10 minute segment) for case consultation. Please do not sign up for core skills if you don’t currently see 1-3 couples regularly. We will discuss the details at our 1st Core Skills meeting. If you choose to pursue EFT Certification, the four sessions and brief video presentation will fulfill some of the ICEEFT requirements for certification. More details about EFT Certification are available at ICEEFT.com.
At the end of our Core Skills Series, we believe that you will feel a greater sense of confidence in your ability to help couples in distress and a renewed sense of enthusiasm and passion about your clinical work.

Testimonials for EFT Core Skills with
Sam & Michelle
I loved the EFT Core Skills training with Dr. Gannon and Dr. Jinich. The class sessions were fun, enlightening, and incredibly useful in my roles as clinician and teacher. I have a much deeper appreciation for, and understanding of, attachment theory and EFT. We practiced over and over again putting theory into practice with helpful, supportive role plays with in the moment feedback from supervisors. I felt 100% supported throughout the training, and so grateful for the skillful and kind supervision during the role plays. Highly recommend

EFT Core Skills with Sam and Michelle offers a rare experience: a deep grounding in the theory and techniques of EFT; an opportunity to significantly deepen understanding and efficacy with our clients; a safe and supportive environment; personal and professional transformation; an environment in which participants can explore the full range of emotion, learn, and play; all in a collegial setting with dedicated peers and teachers. Or, said another way: We laughed, we cried, two thumbs up!

I found the EFT Core Skills with Sam and Michelle to be a fantastic learning experience as the two weekends catapulted my EFT knowledge and comfort level. Sam and Michelle are amazing EFT trainers balancing content delivery with real world examples and lots of experiential practice. I was able to use the theory and experiential learning directly after the weekends with my couples. Sam and Michelle are experienced therapists and trainers. I would highly recommend taking an EFT training with SFCEFT.

Being able to spend 48 hours learning, refining and immersing myself in EFT Core Skills was not simply about the experience.
The learning was also about the supportive environment that was upheld as a model and intentionally used to help us emote when needed. Sam and Michelle are well experienced and able to speak to various realities that we as therapists encounter with ourselves, and our clients as we attempt to authentically use EFT in our practice. One of the most formidable aspects of the training was being able to do role plays in small groups with Sam and Michelle, and the supporting cast of supervisors. I grew tremendously from each supervisor’s support and feedback. The training is setup such that you also gain perspective from participants and the styles each of them use, and I definitely appreciated that inclusion. With all that said, I would highly recommend EFT Core Skills with Sam and Michelle.

The EFT Core Skills Training really transformed the way I work with couples. Both Sam and Michelle put so much work at helping us understand and feel the model. The days at the training flew by because we did so many different activities and role-plays to help us experience the EFT work. Sam and Michelle were some of the best teachers I have ever met because of their passion for this work – I truly saw how much of themselves they put into teaching. They used every second of the days into teaching and were so warm and loving. I left not only a better therapist, but as a better human being.
I have taken hundreds of trainings and seminars and find that those led by Michelle and Sam are in an amazing category by themselves. Because of their ability for warmth and empathy, I was able to challenge myself to step out of my comfort zone with a feeling of confidence and safety that would not have been possible in another environment. Michelle and Sam work together to keep things interesting and interactive using humor, role plays, videos, and their no nonsense practicalities demonstrating their effectiveness as clinicians in the real world. Both of them are genuine and able to organically meet people where there are at despite their expertise or beginner status at whatever they may be learning from Sam and Michelle. For me watching them facilitate the EFT Core Skills and Forgiveness Training for Therapists Training was like seeing “therapist whisperers” in action. They are both mentors to me and I hope to one day emulate their ability to bring the best out of those who take their workshops and trainings which is what I felt they did for me personally. After taking Sam and Michelle’s trainings, I felt confident in applying what they taught me in the real world with my own clients and while assisting the weekend after at one of their Hold Me Tight Workshops. I recommend any training with them without any reservation!”

I have done four workshops and trainings with Sam and Michelle and I am ALWAYS grateful to myself for the gift of this time with these two wonderful teachers. Sam and Michelle’s experience with the model is vast, and their expertise is inspiring and motivating. However, I have to say that the best part for me is that they model EFT in every part of the training, from the formal teaching moments to the interactions during coffee breaks. Both Sam and Michelle are loving, responsive and emotionally connected, and this translates into a feeling of security, trust and deep appreciation for the model based on lived experience. This remarkable ability to attune to the participants’ nervousness as they learn the EFT model is an integral and huge part of the learning. It creates a space of real connection and closeness within the group and encourages participants to open more, and deepen the learning further. I always feel as if I come away a better therapist, but more importantly, I feel that I come away a better person. I also feel as if I have created a bond with a great group of colleagues that I am sure to connect with again and again.

Sam and Michelle’s EFT Core Skills is perhaps the most complete learning experience I’ve had. They create a container of safety and community with which they present material clearly and concisely and conduct experiential exercises that enable participants to grow optimally. If this were Yelp, this would be a five star rating only because the rating scale does not go any higher!
~Mark Perlmutter, LMFT
Taking the EFT Core Skills training with Sam and Michelle was a wonderful experience, personally and professionally. They are skillful instructors, warm and enthusiastic, and create an atmosphere that is very supportive and conducive to learning. I especially appreciated the amount of practice time allotted, and the variety of ways this was done. Additionally, the opportunity to meet new colleagues, many of whom I know I will maintain ongoing relationships with, was a welcome aspect of the training.

Having considered repeating EFT Core Skills for some time, I was intrigued last spring by Dr Sam Jinich and Dr Michelle Gannon’s announcement of Core Skills on Mondays for eight sessions. As I know that I learn better in smaller doses with time in between classes to reflect and integrate information, I thought I would give this new approach a try. It was a very wise decision. The classes were informative and inspiring.
I experienced deepening into the material rather than merely repeating it. In addition, Sam and Michelle provided very valuable, practical tips on how to make EFT work, essentially answering unasked questions. Michelle and Sam and their two assistants made the role-plays safe and consistently productive as well as varied. And quite wonderfully, they work very hard to support diversity and create a sense of community.
~Charlie Ruff, LMFT
Michelle and Sam are awesome, delightful and inspiring and make an amazing team with an extraordinary chemistry between them by complementing each other.Their warm, passionate and down to earth personalities along with their excellent knowledge, expertise, and experience of EFT and their personable, accessible , skillful, practical non intimidating approach to teaching and to group members created a supportive environment, which made me and everyone else in the group feel inspired, encouraged, included and supported throughout the course.
The smaller group size of EFT Core Skills allowed plenty of time to take turns to practice the new skills and ask plenty of questions . Their wonderful knowledgeable helpers / supervisors, Sonja Yount and Barbara Gabriel were very supportive and encouraging in guiding us through our role playing practice in small groups!
I have learned a lot, not only the EFT core skills in depth, but also have met interesting colleagues and have made new friends.
I am so grateful! Highly recommend!

I have recently finished the EFT Core Skills training with Dr. Michelle Gannon and Dr. Sam Jinich. This training is crucial in the process of becoming a couples’ counselor! It teaches you how to identify the core issues between partners, how to navigate their emotions through the EFT stages, the process of how to repair injuries, and create more connections and facilitate emotional healing. Michelle and Sam are very professional teachers, and their style is very warm and caring and made me feel a part of the EFT family right away. I highly recommend it to any therapist that wants to work with couples to take this training!
